How much should I budget for home painting services?

What does it cost to paint my home? You may be asking this question because you want to change the space you have been staring at for years. You’ve had enough and you’re ready for something new. Now you need to get an estimate. Maybe two, three, or four! You meet with multiple companies and afterwards, you receive their bid on your project. You notice that each estimate has a different total. Do you go with the cheapest? This scares you so you look at the most expensive, because your father told you, “You get what you pay for!”. You consider the middle man because the cheapest is too good to be true and the more expensive may be a rip off. In this article, I’ll provide you with information that can better help you make the right decision for your project. How are Interiors priced?Generally, pricing is based off the square and linear foot of the paint-able surface area. In the case of interiors, each wall is measured along with ceiling height (L X H = Sq ft of wall one). Walls, Ceilings, trim, and doors are taken into consideration during the estimate process. We take measurements and factor in any additional materials. Be wary of the painter who does not measure. Fact: It costs more to paint the entire interior of your home than the exterior. This is because there are more paint-able surfaces per sq ft. How are Exteriors priced? The same way interiors are priced. Pricing is based off the square and linear foot of the surface. In the case of exteriors, each wall, skirting, and piece of sheeting is measured. We also consider the type of materials to be painted over (Vinyl, Aluminium, Steel, etc.). Determining the material on your exterior is important. This determines the prep, paint spec, and additional materials needed. All exteriors need to be inspected for leaching and power-washed prior to painting. Most require sealing around windows and door frames. *see image above Estimates with different prices? You got three estimates back from three different companies but the prices are all different. Why? This is because not all painters prepare or use materials others would. The cheaper estimate might not include caulking around windows, siding treatment, or proper spec/quality paint for an exterior. In some cases, it may not be necessary to caulk around the windows at all. This is why Proto Painting offers a price match guarantee when provided with a detailed estimate from a competitor.
